Boot Storage & Seasonal Maintenance
Proper storage prevents cracking and creasing. Learn the best practices for keeping your boots in top shape year-round.
How you store your boots matters as much as how you clean them. Poor storage leads to creasing, cracking, mold, and misshapen shafts. Here's how to keep your boots in peak condition between wears and across seasons.
Daily Storage
- Use boot trees or boot shapers. Cedar boot trees are ideal — they absorb moisture and maintain the boot's form. At minimum, stuff the shafts with rolled newspaper or pool noodles.
- Let them air out. Never put boots away while they're still damp from sweat or rain. Let them breathe for a few hours in a well-ventilated area before storing.
- Store upright. Laying boots on their side causes the shaft to crease and collapse. A boot rack or standing them upright in a closet is best.
Seasonal Storage
If you're putting boots away for a season, a little extra preparation goes a long way.
- Clean thoroughly. Remove all dirt and condition the leather before storage. Leftover grime breaks down leather over time.
- Apply protector. A fresh coat of leather protector shields against dust and humidity while stored.
- Insert boot trees. Essential for maintaining shape during extended storage.
- Use breathable storage bags. Cotton or canvas bags are ideal. Never use plastic — it traps moisture and promotes mold.
- Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid attics, basements, and garages where temperature and humidity fluctuate.
Check on stored boots every month or two. A quick inspection catches mold, pest damage, or drying before it becomes a serious problem.
Dealing with Mold
If you spot mold on stored boots, don't panic. Wipe the affected area with a cloth dampened with a 1:1 solution of water and white vinegar. Let the boots dry completely in open air, then condition the leather. Mold is a sign of excess moisture — improve airflow and consider adding silica gel packets to your storage area.
Rotating Your Boots
If you own multiple pairs, rotate them. Wearing the same boots every day doesn't give the leather time to dry out from sweat and moisture. A 24-hour rest between wears significantly extends the life of your boots.
Good storage is the cheapest insurance policy for your boots. A few simple habits keep them looking and feeling great for decades.
